In May of last year, a young ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), approximately 2 months old, was rescued from a farm after part of its tail had been cut. Upon arrival at the Rescue Center, Dr. Cordero, our veterinarian, provided immediate care, and together with staff from the Huetar Norte Conservation Area (ACAHN) and farm workers, an attempt was made to return the cub to the site where it was found.

OCELOT RETURNS TO IT'S HABITAT

The cub remained there for two nights. During the day, it was fed milk and brought back to Las Pumas for wound evaluation by the veterinarian. On the second night, camera traps were installed, and it was confirmed that the mother had returned looking for her cub.

Following this outcome, we emphasize our campaign “DON’T TAKE ME FROM MY HABITAT”, which aims to reduce unnecessary rescues of infant wildlife. In many cases, the mother may be nearby even if she’s not visible—so we must always wait and verify thoroughly before removing a young animal.

In this case, even after human intervention, efforts were made to prevent the cub from being separated from its mother. These situations highlight the importance of good intentions, patience, collaboration, and a shared goal: the conservation of wildlife! Always remember to ask for help by contacting SINAC or the nearest Rescue Center to know how to act in such situations.
